Half your calls arrive after you've gone home

Customers don't keep office hours. New call data suggests nearly half of business calls come in evenings and weekends. Here's what that means if your phone goes to voicemail at 6pm.

Most businesses staff their phones from nine to six on weekdays. It makes sense from the inside. That's when the team is in, and that's when the work gets done.

But think about when you make calls to businesses yourself. It's on your lunch break, on the drive home, in the evening once the kids are asleep, or on a Saturday morning when you finally have time to sort out life admin. Your customers are exactly the same.

What the numbers say

AnswerConnect, a US answering service, analysed almost six million minutes of business call logs from April to June 2026. It found that 47% of calls to US businesses happened outside traditional Monday to Friday working hours.[1]

That's one study, from a company that sells after-hours answering, so I'd treat the exact number with some care. But it matches what we see whenever a client looks at their own call logs for the first time: the evenings and weekends are busier than anyone expected.

Why after-hours callers matter more than you think

Someone calling at 8pm is rarely browsing. They've usually made up their mind to do something: book a table, check a room, move an appointment, ask about a delivery. They're calling now because now is when they finally have time.

If they reach a recording, a few will leave a message. Many will simply try the next business on the list, and that business might pick up.

A closed phone line doesn't stop customers from calling. It just decides who they end up calling instead.

Your options, honestly

You can extend staff hours, which works but costs a lot for the volume you get at night. You can use a traditional answering service, which takes messages but usually can't book or change anything. Or you can let an AI voice agent cover the evenings and weekends, handling the routine requests fully and passing everything else to your team first thing in the morning with the details already captured.

A simple first step

Pull your call log for the last month and count how many calls came in outside your opening hours, and how many of those you returned. That one number will tell you whether after-hours cover is a nice-to-have or something you're losing customers over.
